The Black Diamond

The cities of Chapada Diamantina preserve the memory of mining in their houses.

❝For most of the 19th century, Bahia was the largest producer of diamonds in the world.

Diamond production declined due to mines in South Africa. Production in Chapada was only saved by carbonado, a variety of diamond used in industry.

It was on the outskirts of the city of Lençóis that the largest diamond ever seen was found, the so-called black or carbonado diamond weighing 3,167 carats.
